[PlanetCCRMA] dual boot mess

I created the system rescue usb but my computer (thinkpad) won't boot from
it. When I go into the boot options i see it as generic device but when I
select it, it doesn't do anything. It does have a live system on it
(created with fedora media writer).
The grub.cfg files is in indeed under boot/grub2. I did not edit it (there
is a strong advice not to). I did try adding a custom section (through
/etc/grub.d files) but that ends up with errors.
Any other suggestions for salvaging the situation?
