So I've just tried this. I shutdown all apps so that all I had was my
bare GNOME session with a single terminal window open. I logged in
remotely using SSH and did a tail -f /var/log/messages and in a second
SSH connection I was all set to run dmesg > dmesg.txt.

Immediately on typing "sudo service haldaemon start" I get a hard
lockup. No response in my terminal or my SSH connections, and the GUI
is completely locked. All I can do is move my mouse around the screen -
nothing is clickable and my system-monitor applet has stopped updating.

On reboot there is absolutely nothing in /var/log/messages - last line
from before the haldaemon start and then the message about syslogd
starting.

Keith.
