Well this is a bit embarrassing! As some suggested the system noise
was eliminated when I plugged the phones directly into my sound card.
I had been using the more convenient phone jack on the front of the
Dell. The good news is that I get great sound from the 280's now.
Guess I can bear the shame ;-) Thanks for everyones help!
