I downloaded audacity-src-1.2.4b.tar.gz and pa_snapshot_v19.tar.gz.
Because of a mis-reading on my part :-[ , I installed the snapshot of
portaudio before doing

    $ ./configure --with-portaudio=v19 --without-portmixer
    $ make
    $ su
    # make install

Since the install path is different, Audacity 1.2.3 remains untouched,
and I can launch Audacity 1.2.4 from the command line. If I select ALSA
for I/O, when I import a WAV and try to play it, I get a dialogue
reading 'Error while opening sound device. Please check the input device
settings and the project sample rate'.

<http://www.audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=LinuxIssues> suggests
using '-ljack -lasound', but I'm not sure how to use them; certainly,
they seem not to function as normal switches. . . .

/b.
