Yeah, but I think you didn't have to wiggle your mouse, now did you?
;-) I do not get the

load =

lines unless I wiggle my mouse by hand. Looks to me like you're
working. Now you want to bring down your latencies and make sure you
still do not get xruns.

I just brought up the machine in runlevel 3 and then ran fluxbox
instead of KDE. Same issue with the interrupts, as I think is
expected.

This is a kernel problem for sure.

Do you have any good notes on how you patched your kernel? I'd like to
try this under Gentoo where I don't have the problems and see what it
works like.
