I hate to answer myself so soon :-) Muse _is_ working. It looks like I
needed to "Save Configuration", most probably there was something stale
in the configuration files that was completely confusing muse (I was
getting midi output errors). So it looks like it is working (muse
0.6.0pre2 and the new alsa with the usb midi stuff). 

Anyway, on to more testing.
