(it is a netbook with no firewire interface but...)

This is booting into 2.6.31.12-1.rt20.1.fc12.ccrma. The kernel is built
with the old firewire stack, so that should be fine. Starting "jackd -d
firewire" does print "firewire ERR: FFADO: Error creating virtual
device" which is to be expected as there is no firewire device attached.
libraw1394 is not the latest (2.0.4 instead of 2.0.5). libdc1394 is
2.1.2 which is fine.

So all the pieces seem to be there. What versions do you have installed?
What kernel do are you booting into? (do a "uname -r" to find out). What
kernel modules are loaded? (/sbin/lsmod - that would let us know which
stack is loaded).

Exactly what does jackd -d firewire print when it starts?

I suspect a permissions problem if everything else is fine...
