[PlanetCCRMA] Missing kernel packages?

In the last couple of months I've upgraded 3 systems from Fedora Core 3
to Fedora Core 5, and I keep encountering problems with "missing" kernel
packages. This problem is "solved" in the sense that I now have
successfully installed all of the desired kernel packages, but it
remains "unsolved" because I don't understand how I succeeded!
Here's a brief summary of what happened with the last of the 3 upgrades:
1. First, when I tried to install planetccrma-core or planetccrma-core-edge,
one or both, I'm not sure which,
yum complained that kernel.i686 0:2.6.16-1.2080.13.rrt [or rdt].rhfc5.ccrma
was required but could not be installed because a more recent kernel
(kernel-2.6.16-1.2122_FC5) was already installed. So I removed the
more recent kernel. This was in 'yum shell'.
2. Then I said
> install planetccrma-core planetccrma-core-edge
and got this news:
Error: Unable to satisfy dependencies
Error: Package kernel-module-alsa-2.6.16-1.2080.13.rdt.rhfc5.ccrma needs kernel-
i686 = 2.6.16-1.2080.13.rdt.rhfc5.ccrma, this is not available.
Error: Package planetccrma-core needs kernel-i686 = 2.6.16-1.2080.13.rdt.rhfc5.c
crma, this is not available.
Strange, because looking on the repository web site
http://ccrma.stanford.edu/planetccrma/mirror/fedora/linux/planetcore/5/i386/repodata/repoview/kernel-0-2.6.16-1.2080.13.rdt.rhfc5.ccrma.html
the package seems to be there!
But then only minutes later, this command succeeded:
# yum install planetccrma-core-edge
And then, so did this:
# yum shell
Setting up Yum Shell
> install planetccrma-core
...
> run
So, I now have all the kernels installed that I want (except maybe to
reinstall kernel-2.6.16-1.2122_FC5). I'm happy.
But I would really be glad if someone could explain why it failed and then
succeeded. And maybe if anyone else is getting freaked out by this same
behavior, that information would benefit them also.
Details below.

[Amazing, that worked too! So what was wrong the first time?
Was it because I tried to install both "core" and "core-edge"
packages at once? But why should that make a difference?
Could something done earlier in the same yum shell session
cause it to fail to find the kernel package? Could it be
because at the start of the session, the newer kernel was
still installed, thereby blocking yum from seeing
the PlanetCCRMA version?]
