David, the system crawl is without any audio apps running at all!

All I do is login as root into Gnome and the whole system is slow,
infact, it even takes ages just to login.

So I do get some sounds out, I just do not get any sound from the
soundcard test.
(as root): lsof | grep "snd" gives me

snd-ak411 1946 root cwd DIR 253,0
4096 2 /
snd-ak411 1946 root rtd DIR 253,0
4096 2 /
snd-ak411 1946 root txt unknown
              /proc/1946/ exe
gnome-set 5314 root 34u CHR 116,0
         5546 /dev/snd/co ntrolC0
mixer_app 5397 root 35u CHR 116,0
         5546 /dev/snd/co ntrolC0

Which does not mean anything to me.

CPU usage by snd-ak4114/0 is always about 65%

So, what do I do next?

If there are HW issues am I wasting my time on FC or Linux?

Should I try another distro? I tried mandriva and had problems with
that?

Should I go for Red Hat?

All I want is a DAW that works. I chose linux because I wanted to get
away from windows bloat ware, ie seeing increases in HW being gobbled up
by useless software upgrades.

I just want a system that works!!!

Sorry for that rant but I am not really a techie. I play a little and
have a little understanding but I just want to make music not play with
computer code etc etc.

Bal.

So, you DO get some output from the card (good - vol settings are up),
but that means you're saying that some apps are not producing sound?
Which ones? Are you sure you've got them set up with proper outputs?

CPU usage of 66% is MUCH to high, I'd say. Are you getting this while
you are running some audio app? Or is it that high all the time with no
specific audio app running?
.. what is given with (as root): lsof | grep "snd"

X running at 25% seems high to me also... and of course, added
together, that's 91% ! .. so yes.. your system is crawling. :(

the above 'lsof' command should help show what app(s) are using
that sound module and heavy system resources. If possible, try
a few different sound apps and see if they are lighter on the system.
If it's only 1 app (perhaps 2), then contact their devel team. If it's
many (all) sound apps, then it could be a driver/hardware compatibility
issue.

... since your hardware seems to already be experiencing compatibility
issues, that would not surprise me too much, but no fun for you.

Good luck

David
