I've been happy with yum + yumex as opposed to the up2date stuff.  yum
is installed by default.  Then
	yum install yumex

yumex provides a GUI interface to yum.  yumex helps a lot with figuring
out your package decisions.

(I'm not claiming that this is better than apt-get/synaptic.  Just
another option.)
