[PlanetCCRMA] 4-channels?

I am having problems getting 4-channel output. I am using m-audio quatro 
card, on RH9. 
Here is what I found out so far
In clm (under xemacs) when I set :channels 4 in the with-sound call I get 
a 4-channel soundfile (with the sounds at the correct channels) but I get 
no playback.
When I open the above generated file in snd I get playback but channels 
3&4 output to speakers 1&2. 
When I run pd -alsa -channels 4
I get:
snd_pcm_hw_params_set_channels (input): Invalid argument

(I don't use jack. When I start jack I get underrun errors and the sound 
is distorted so I avoid jack). 
any ideas how to look for the problems and (or) fix it?
