Just found out why my xmms-jack link was stuck in mono: the first mp3 files I played to test it were mono recordings; looks like if you open xmms with a mono file to begin with then it only creates one audio source in jack. So even if I opened stereo files afterwards there was still only the one link. If I open it initially with a stereo file it works ok.
