Right or wrong, I think this happens by design. For instance, if I am
using my on-board sound chip (which is controller by alsamixer, and I
adjust levels in xine, I see the same thing. xine controls alsamixer.

The problem with this design is that when you exit xine alsamixer does
not return the levels to what I had before, so if I had xine turned up
load, when I start some other app I will get that app turned up loud. 

Anyway, you're not seeing something that we don't see also.
