so yes, uninstalling and reinstalling all of gnome makes it work again 
in fc3 (though switchdesk isn't writing it as default, though i've 
tried...)
a few tries with the rme multiface/pci, some things are odd, but most 
work. one odd thing is that the hdspmixer is showing levels 
(fluctuating levels, in fact) on the input channels 1-8. odd. no sound 
is actually there.

zynaddsubfx freezes the entire system (!) on launch!!!
