have you tried the qjackctl that makes a jack startup script? it 
kills arts in this script. i have found that this works great with my 
pci multiface. i don't even use the hdspmixer much.

is it the cardbus that's the problem? do you have a pci card / cpu 
you could try it on? i'm considering a laptop for my planet-ccrma use 
as well, and i would be relying on the cardbus as well...
