Here is more on this.  upon looking at /sbin/lspci -v I have found that when I 
boot the main planet kernel (.rh90), my HDSP and eth0 share interrupt 5, and 
it doesn't work, and eth0 gets dropped - cat /proc/interrupts shows only the 
HDSP on interrupt 5

when booting with the "inbetween" kernel (caps.rh90), lspci shows that HDSP 
and eth0 share irq 11 - they do it more successfully however, both are alive, 
and cat /proc/interrupts shows irq 11 as eth0, hdsp

so if I could change these irq assignments, I might be in business.  but, like 
the man of yesterday with a similar question, I don't know how to do this.  I 
went into the BIOS (it's a SOYO mother board) and found that the best I could 
do was set irq's to "pci" or "reserved" - they were already set to "pci"  - 
wha?

clearly the kernel is picking irq's - does anyone know how to adjust this?
