    I'm not sure that's the problem; mine isn't using any USB, and that
might make all my help moot, but:

    I have an internal TV capture card with a webcam (I use GnomeMeeting
and/or TeamSpeak when possible) and I have a problem with device names. 
I have the TV on /dev/video0 ('cause I'll never have more than one) and
the webcam(s) on /dev/video0+n since there could plausibly be more.

    To do this, I have something in /etc/rc.local to insmod the video
card, and whenever I use the TV, I have an icon to specify the device:

    xawtv -c /dev/video1

    Look closely; it might not be a matter of overlay- that's just one
of many diagnostics that you can get if it's on the wrong device.  Give
it a shot; maybe it'll help, aye?
