Humm...that was a bit radical. I did the apm --suspend. I saw two xruns
reported to my local ssh terminal and then lost control of the machine with
every light on the front of the PC blinking green. (Apparently a suspend
indicator) I couldn't reconnect with ssh, so I hit a key on the keyboard,
the machine came back just fine. jack_lsp still worked.

If apm is running (I do see [kapmd] in ps -aux) the apparently it isn't an
apm problem, or is more subtle.

I'm going to try Tim's suggestions on xset next.

You can run apm --suspend to force a suspend.

I would image that the BIOS only spots kb and mouse movement, but linux
could reset the APM timer if it wanted to.
