OK, so I'll let you guys grind out how much truth there is in that.

I do have a question though. When you make a jump like this, especially
changing the C compiler, then that means a rebuild of every tool I'm using,
correct? that's a pretty big time commitment which folks hate to make unless
there's a real, measurable performance improvement like you suggest.

I get worried that if I build tools on one distribution, I can't run them
reliably on another, but maybe that's urban legend?

Ugh, me again, sorry, forgot to put this before.

The big advantage is gcc3.2, it produces *much* better C code and has ABI
compatibility for C++. I've seen 30% speed improvements in math heavy
code.
