Mike,
   OK, start jack, and then run 

jack_lsp

What gets reported?

then run alsaplayer and jack_lsp. What gets reported?

   Just to be completely sure, do:

apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade

and make sure everything is totally up to date.

OK.  Sorry.  Started jack as a regular user, not root using jackstart -d
alsa -d .  Started fine.  Started alsaplayer with alsaplayer -o jack. 
Alsaplayer started fine, but would not play any files or CDs.
