   Humm...not simple then. You can't start jack at all then? You have
installed the latest jack packages from the Planet I assume?

   Could it be your kernel/kernel configuration? Have you installed the low
latency kernel? Does it report that low latency is enabled, as per
Fernando's instructions?

   What sort of PC/motherboard is this?

Yes.  Alsaplayer works fine playing MP3s, wavs and CDs.
