Which version of ams do you have installed? I just put out a newer
version (1.5.4-2) because of a bug in ams (that was reported in one of
the mailing lists) and a post from the author with a patch the fixes the
bad behavior. In my case (RH8 as well) I did not see any freezes like
you mention. Are you using it standalone or as a jack client?
