I didn't take the comments personally -- I was thinking of
ALSA -- that's all it takes to make me unhappy.  It's hard
to debug a problem like this where it looks like it's specific
to the hardware, and I don't have the hardware.  And,
I get no pleasure from working at that level -- the gain
is too ephemeral or something.
