Funding is available for a number of awards through the Department =20
for Employment & Learning (DEL), Overseas Research Students Awards =20
Scheme (ORSAS), the European Social Fund (ESF), and Queen=92s =20
University for postgraduate students commencing in October 2006. =20
Awards will be available on a competitive basis to the best-qualified =20=
candidates. Successful candidates may be eligible for a =A31000 =20
Research Travel Fund for per year for presentation of research at =20
international conferences and festivals.

Masters in Sonic Arts (http://www.sarc.qub.ac.uk/ma)
The MA in Sonic Arts is a one year full-time taught programme that =20
covers multiple aspects of sound, creativity and technology. The =20
course takes advantage of the international cross-disciplinary team =20
and the unique studio and performance facilities at the Sonic Arts =20
Research Centre. The first semester provides students with a detailed =20=
insight into sound and technologies used in both industrial and =20
experimental contexts. This semester covers topics such as the =20
structure and function of the ear, basic principles of auditory =20
perception, surround sound recording, editing, mixing, sound =20
synthesis and design techniques. The second semester allows students =20
to focus on current developments in Sonic Arts by enabling them to =20
choose one of the following routes: Composition & Sound Design, =20
Computer Gaming, Media and Theory, Music Interfaces and Interaction, =20
and Digital Signal Processing.

A fully funded three-year Ph.D. studentship is available on an EPSRC =20
research grant for study under the supervision of Dr Maarten van =20
Walstijn. The aim of the research project is to investigate new =20
techniques for extraction of physical model parameters from musical =20
wind instrument oscillations, on the basis of sensing and processing =20
acoustic signals within the instrument sound generation loop. Further =20=

The Sonic Arts Research Centre (SARC) is a newly established centre =20
of excellence, dedicated to the research of music technology. This =20
unique interdisciplinary project has united internationally =20
recognised experts in the areas of musical composition, signal =20
processing, internet technology and digital hardware.
The Centre is established in a purpose-built facility located =20
alongside the engineering departments of Queen's University.
The centrepiece of SARC, the Sonic Laboratory, provides a unique =20
space for cutting-edge initiatives in the creation and delivery of =20
music and audio. The Sonic Laboratory's uniqueness is vested in the =20
degree of flexibility it can provide for experiments in 3D sound =20
diffusion and for ground-breaking compositional and performance work =20
within a purpose-built, variable acoustic space.
The Centre was completed in October 2003 and was officially opened by =20=
Karlheinz Stockhausen during the Sonorities Festival in April 2004.
