[PlanetCCRMA] new computer old problems

Hello,
I'm (again) running into problems setting up nvidia graphics on a new
thinkpad and would very much hope your collective wisdom can figure it out.
It a P14 laptop and from the various online documentation and discussions
my nvidia card should be working with optimus:
RTX A500 laptop gpu
Driver version 550.78

But at the moment it doesn't seem to be used. I tried following this
suggestion

Step 8  resulted in black screen.
I'm running xfce desktop
Do I just try to setup application profiles in the settings? But then which
applications and how to set them up?
Or any other suggestions?
