In many cases this won't be a problem. But sometimes you can get problems with 
incompatible (new) versions of shared libraries. In those cases such plugins 
will have to be re-compiled using the latest libraries on the distro you want 
to use.

It's also possible to use the ladspa, lv2, or dssi plugins while keeping them 
on you backupdrive by setting the environment variables LV2_PATH, LADSPA_PATH, 
or DSSI_PATH to point to the directories where these plugins can be found.
