[PlanetCCRMA] /dev/dsp

I've using Fedora on WMWare Fusion on a MacBook.  The sound works fine 
for some apps, but not for others.  I've tried pd (and hydrogen, via 
jack), but no matter which output I use (Alsa, jack) I get poor 
results.  Alsa, for example, pd via Alsa produces just gritty garbled 
sound.  What's the right way to interface with /dev/dsp, which -- as I 
understand it, is the underlying output for Apple's FreeBSD like audio?
