After investigating the recommendation from #alsa or #jack to not use '-X
seq' in Jack, and use a2jmidid... I've come to a preliminary conclusion that
was a spurious recommendation.
Are there bugs in the jack MIDI <-> alsa MIDI implementation in F12 that
would cause the issues I'm seeing with a parallel-port MIDI interface
(snd-mtpav)? MIDI works fine with a USB keyboard (Akai LPK 25).
Hooking up a real keyboard (Rol JP-8000, Yam Sy-77, Yam DD-55) with a real
MIDI plug is where I end up with trouble.
Seems like a2jmidid is needed only for jack users using FFADO; I'm using
ALSA driving a M-Audio Delta 66, which I got used on ebay specifically
because I wanted stable harware on Linux....
Hooking up this MTPAV has been frustrating enough that it looks like I'll be
needing a USB MIDI box too (e.g.

)
Is this a good summary of the Jack Midi vs Alsa Midi vs FFFADO situation, or
should I go ahead and waste time figuring out a2jmidid when qjackctl does
everything I need, beautifully.

If you're only connecting a small number of ports you could always use
the simple method of connecting the jack-midi port to jack-midi-through
which magically connects to alsa-midi-through which you then connect to
the alsa-midi-port. (or am I missing something?)

Yes, you are both missing that the jack-midi-to-alsa-midi bridge is only
included in the alsa backend, not in the ffado (aka firewire) backend.
a2jmidid (or similar apps) are the only solution here.
Or just use jack-midi enabled apps:-)
