I ran across this archive looking into an identical problem of crazy
amounts of xruns on my Thinkpad (the one listed in this thread is a
Toshiba from Patrick Ladam).

I found this link and tried the following fix and its working for me
atm. I'm not having ANY xruns. Hoping this might help someone else.

Solution:
I added " position_fix=1 model=3stack " to my option hda-intel line in
my /etc/modprobe.conf
original:
options snd-hda-intel index=0
"fix":
options snd-hda-intel index=0 position_fix=1model=3stack
