Hmmm, you should not be running any sound server. Check to see that you
don't have the gnome sound server checked to start, it is in
"Preferences" "Sound". 

What do you see in:
  cat /proc/asound/cards
  cat /proc/asound/devices

This is on fc4 now, right?
