Could you do a "cat /proc/asound/devices"?

That should show a midi interface for the 1010lt, I presume it has one,
right? I have not worked with VirMIDI so I don't know if it could be the
source of the problem. Maybe you could disable it temporarily for now.

This would seem to suggest you are missing device files in /dev/snd/? What
do you see if you do a:
  ls /dev/snd/

What happens if you start Qjackctl and go to the "Connect" window and 
in there to the MIDI tab? Do you see the midi ports? If you do see them
you could try starting kmidimon and connectig the input to it to see if
you get midi bytes from the external controller.
