What happens when you try to record with something on the command
line, like arecord?  Do you get any errors?

Can you record from the line-in?

Do you have to do something like select "capture" or unmute in the
mixer ("Volume Control" app) for the mic input?  The SBLive is
somewhat complicated, IIRC.  Is the mic channel routed to playback
only?
