well, that does something.
adding the code listed here for jack_fst to reserve memory:

into jfst.c gets it to launch with the statement that it's reserving  
memory, opens the VSTi, then kills everything! it quits, jack quits,  
every open app quits, the x screen redraws.
interesting. never seen that before.
