[PlanetCCRMA] weird midi in problem

I'v got a problem with my hardware midi in ..
amidi -l shows

Device    Name
hw:0,0    Yamaha DS-XG (YMF744) MIDI

and it receives ok (checked it with amidi -d)

So far so good.
Rosegarden and Muse will play midi fine through the hardware midi out, BUT 
midi in doesn't work.
I've noticed this in the console output of rosegarden

AlsaDriver::setRecordDevice - attempting to subscribe (1) already subscribed

Fedora Core 3 kernel 2.6.11-0.3.rdt.rhfc3.ccrma

any help appreciated
