[PlanetCCRMA] snd and m-audio card

I recently did a full update and now snd (or sndplay) doesn't recognise my 
m-audio quattro card instead playing on the built-in soundcard. 
I am running RH9. I can get snd to play through the M-audio if I start 
jack, but I get a lot of noise (and I try to avoid jack in general because 
of repeated alsa_pcm:xrun errors). 
at startup I'm setting the SNDLIB_ALSA_DEVICE var to the external card, 
and my best guess is that the newer version of snd doesn't handle that 
correctly. 
any ideas?
