This happens to me a lot.  Usually it is because you've lost write
permissions for your ~/.ICEauthority file.  Best way to fix it is to
log in remotely, or if you can't do that, ctl-alt-F1 to get to the
console, log in, and just remove that file:

rm .ICEauthority

it'll ask you if you mean it, since it's write protected.  Tell it you do.

You could also just change the permissions, which might be nicer.

There are other authority files it could be, but this is the one that
breaks the most consistently for me (though, I haven't had this happen
to me on FC3, only on FC2).
