I don't consider that a hack at all. In my opinion, this is the
correct thing to do. Easy configuration and full control of what is 
happening. I don't see the point of using any of those confusing
alternatives. I think modules.conf/modprobe.conf is unnecesarrily
confusing. In my opinion, the installation scripts should instead just 
insert modprobe lines into /etc/rc.local instead.
