... forgot to CC the list ...

I'm running with hyperthreading, so I'm using the smp kernel. I can boot
non-smp also, but I have to do the Nvidia driver dance when I do that...
If you want me to try that, I will.

I had shut off the onboard sound on my motherboard. I turned it back on
and set it to card 1.

[root@studio ~]# cat /etc/modprobe.conf
alias usb-controller2 uhci-hcd
alias eth0 sk98lin
alias char-major-81 bttv
alias usb-controller ehci-hcd
alias usb-controller1 ohci-hcd
alias ieee1394-controller ohci1394
alias scsi_hostadapter ata_piix

alias snd-card-0 snd-usb-audio
options snd-usb-audio index=0

options snd-card-1 snd-intel8x0
options snd-intel8x0 index=1

alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

Here is the info you asked for, with that addition of the new card. I
can easily disable that in bios again if need be:

[root@studio ~]# cat /proc/asound/cards
