Hi,
Let's step through this is a sort of orderly manner and see what's
going on. First show us the state of the machine:
uname -a
cat /proc/asound/version
cat /proc/asound/cards
/sbin/lsmod
cat /etc/modprobe.conf
I think that was probably the file you were looking for.
The fact it wasn't restoring settings can be fixed once we know the
state things are in.
