you're using two soundcards?  this could be outta my league, i've not
had any experience getting two soundcards happening at the same time :(

i'm not sure but maybe you need to specify to alsamixer which soundcard
you want to open it with? you're not going to get any sound until you
can open it, because installation of the alsa drivers mutes the mixer
volume ...

hopefully someone else might have a better idea of this than me, but
also, maybe tell us what you've got in /etc/modprobe.conf, or check in
the system logs for any errors that might happen during boot ...

just to update: you're still not able to open alsamixer?
