and I still haven't.

Good point. Here's what I see:

Mar 31 07:58:47 dragonfly su(pam_unix)[7918]: session closed for user news
Mar 31 08:13:47 dragonfly gconfd (matt-4103): Exiting
Mar 31 08:13:47 dragonfly gdm(pam_unix)[3878]: session closed for user matt
Mar 31 08:13:47 dragonfly kernel: mtrr: base(0xf0020000) is not
aligned on a size(0x400000) boundary

Here's where it was (I think) when I did the disconnect. Actually when
we were cleaning we have disconnected the optical cable. I then had
the bright idea of showing my wife that we could disconnect the USB
cable instead. I pulled it an immediately plugged it back in:

Mar 31 09:10:25 dragonfly kernel: usb 3-2: USB disconnect, address 2
Mar 31 09:10:26 dragonfly udev[8239]: removing device node '/udev/input/event2'

Mar 31 09:10:26 dragonfly udev[8201]: removing device node '/udev/snd/pcmC1D0c'

And then the reconnect:

Some of the stuff above abou t'Bad characters' etc. doesn't look very
good but may or may not be a kernel bug.

Thanks for poking me and getting me to look at this.

cheers,
Mark
