OK, tried S7. Same problem. The Alsa built in is:

Compiled on Sep 27 2004 for kernel 2.6.8.1-1.520.1vS7.ll.rhfc2.ccrma.

which is good enough for the card.
I'll send a Gentoo .config file in a few mintes.
What info would Ingo want to see about this machine? lspci -vv? System
logs? Let me know and I'll try to package it up for him.
