Don't worry, just go to /etc/X11 and you will find the old XF86Config there renamed along with the new one that the installation script set up.

If you search around a little you will find the readme or something like it that tells you what is changed.

Or, if you want;  just take a look at copies of those two files and and make adjustments to create a new XF86Config for yourself.  The file is pretty easy to figure out, and you can experiment with it before stating X from the console using any text editor(I like joe(Joes Own Editor)) to edit it.

I your machine is trying to log in via XDM(the graphical login) and hangs there;  leave another note and someone should be able to tell you how to edit the run level to "3" so you can do a "startx" form the console.
