My kernel is built from kernel.org source with patches applied and
then choices made using make menuconfig. I run it on a 3GHz P4 Mobile
laptop (Compaq R3070us) and it's been very good to me. I run it under
both Planet CCRMA/FC2 and Gentoo on the same laptop.

If you are serious about going down that path then I Can dig up the
patch info today and you can give it a try. I think if it was me I'd
probably try building something from 2.6.9 which is released now
instead of 2.6.9-rc2. I don't know what the differences are, but it
seems like you might as well go with the stable version of the kernel
since it's out.
