Bruce,
    You should:

1) Tell us about your hardware. (PC, sound card, etc.)

2) Show us the output of lspci.

3) You should show us your modules.conf file as this loads drivers.

4) Show us the output of lsmod.

5) cat /proc/asound/version

6) cat /proc/asound/cards

Many problems are solved by starting with these things.
