Assuming you have a recent enough version of Ardour,
you could use the alsa sequencer rather than that
device file:

<MIDI-port tag="seq" device="ardour"
type="alsa/sequencer" mode="duplex"/>

Also, don't know if you're using qjackctl but it's 
graphical interface works nicely for configuring audio
and MIDI routes.

I don't really know the reason why only one of the
applications can see the MIDI device. I'm just trying
to guess along with you. I do have a hardware
mixer/MIDI controler, Ardour and Rosegarden working
together using a USB Midiman 8x8. Anyway, maybe two
blind mice can get to the cheese quicker.
