The following:

[timo@muska usb]$ rpm -q -a | grep 2.4.24-1

I thought pressing distribution update on synaptic would do the trick, 
but obviously something went wrong as it installed the SMP kernel and 
left alsa out. Apt get is now downloading the missing packages...
