 Thanks, I took your advice but
 
 alsasound start gives

 Cannot find module snd-intel8x0

even though I can see it the 
/lib/modules/2.4.23.1.ll.rhfc1.ccrma/kernal/sound
directory. I did a /sbin/depmod -a and that didn't complain.
