If there is no /proc/asound then alsa is not loaded at all (so sound
playback is unlikely to work). 

What happens if (with the new soundcard plugged in) do a:
  /etc/rc.d/init.d/alsasound stop (just in case)
  /etc/rc.d/init.d/alsasound start

Is there a /proc/asound after starting the driver? Is there an entry for
the card? What messages do you see in /var/log/messages regarding the
alsa start process?
