[PlanetCCRMA] ardour starts - then gone!

Hi all -
Using RH 7.3, install went fine. Kernel built and booted normally.
Installed the entire CCRMA music and sound collection with Synaptic - 
everything works!

But - after starting and playing around with Ardour a few times, it now will 
not load.  I'll start the jack server, then Ardour. The splash screen starts, 
then it kicks off. Starting from a terminal, the following message appears.

The font "-*-charter-bold-r-*-*-*-180-*-*-*-*-*-*" does not support all 
the required character sets for the current locale "en_US.iso885915"
